Which Airport Should You Use for Pattaya?
Three airports serve Pattaya: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Muang (DMK) in Bangkok, and the smaller U-Tapao (UTP) near Rayong. In practice your airline decides where you land, so this guide compares the three by distance, drive time, and the flights each one handles, then points you to the right transfer once you know your arrival airport.
The Short Version
- Most international arrivals: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the shorter Bangkok run at about 90 km, 1 to 1.5 hours
- Budget and many domestic flights: Don Muang (DMK), the farther one at roughly 180 km, 2 to 2.5 hours
- Closest to Pattaya: U-Tapao (UTP), about 40 to 50 minutes, but limited scheduled flights
- Book your transfer by where your flight actually lands, not by which airport is nearest
How to Decide
The honest answer is that you usually do not pick the airport; the airline does. Your ticket already names the arrival code, so the useful question is which transfer to book once you know it. The codes to look for are BKK for Suvarnabhumi, DMK for Don Muang, and UTP for U-Tapao. Read each section below against your booking, then jump to the matching transfer page. If a connecting itinerary genuinely lets you choose between Bangkok's two airports, the tie-breaker is simple: Suvarnabhumi is the closer pickup for Pattaya.
Suvarnabhumi (BKK): The Main International Gateway
Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok's primary international airport and the one most visitors to Pattaya use. Long-haul and full-service carriers concentrate here, so if you are flying in from Europe, the Middle East, Australia, or on a major Asian airline, BKK is almost certainly your arrival point. It also sits on the eastern, Pattaya-facing side of Bangkok, which makes it the shorter of the two city airports for the coast. The drive covers about 90 km and runs 1 to 1.5 hours along Motorway 7, the Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya expressway, with no city crossing in the way.
That combination, the widest choice of international flights plus the shorter road trip, is why Suvarnabhumi is the default recommendation for Pattaya. For arrivals, see the Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya taxi page, which covers meet-and-greet and fixed fares. For the departure direction back to the airport, the Pattaya to Bangkok taxi page handles Suvarnabhumi drop-offs.
Don Muang (DMK): The Budget and Domestic Hub
Don Muang is Bangkok's older airport, reborn as the base for low-cost flying. Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air run most of their networks from here, alongside regional budget routes and a share of domestic services. If your ticket is with one of those airlines, you are very likely landing at DMK rather than BKK. The catch for Pattaya is geography. Don Muang lies north of central Bangkok, so the transfer is the longest of the Bangkok options, roughly 180 km and 2 to 2.5 hours, because the route has to cross or skirt the city before joining the motorway south.
None of that is a problem once you plan for it; it simply means leaving a little earlier and expecting a slightly higher fare than the Suvarnabhumi run. Two pages cover this airport: Don Muang to Pattaya taxi for arrivals, and Pattaya to Don Muang taxi for the early-morning departure direction that budget schedules so often demand.
U-Tapao (UTP): Closest, but Limited
U-Tapao Pattaya International is the local airport, set near Rayong to the south, and it is comfortably the closest to the city at roughly a 40 to 50 minute drive. On distance alone it wins. The reason it is not the default is its flight schedule: UTP handles far fewer scheduled passenger routes than Bangkok, and the services it does run can vary by season. Many travellers never find a flight into UTP that fits their origin, which sends them back to Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang. Before you build a trip around U-Tapao, confirm that your departure city actually connects to it. If it does, you land closest to Pattaya of all three; if it does not, treat Bangkok as your gateway and pick the transfer to match.
Booking the Transfer That Matches Your Flight
Book the transfer for the airport your flight uses, and let the code on your ticket decide. For the great majority of international arrivals that means Suvarnabhumi, which is also the shorter and usually cheaper run to Pattaya. If you are on a low-cost carrier into Don Muang, plan for the longer northern crossing. If you have secured a rare U-Tapao flight, you get the shortest ride of all. Our Pattaya destinations guide sets the two Bangkok airports side by side against every area we serve. When your arrival airport is settled, use the form below with your flight number and we will match the driver and the fixed fare to it.
Choosing Your Pattaya Airport: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the nearest airport to Pattaya?
U-Tapao (UTP), near Rayong, is the nearest at roughly a 40 to 50 minute drive, but it carries few scheduled flights, so most travellers still arrive in Bangkok. Of the two Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the closer one at about 90 km, 1 to 1.5 hours, while Don Muang (DMK) runs roughly 180 km, or 2 to 2.5 hours.
Should I fly into Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang for Pattaya?
Your airline usually decides for you. Full-service and most long-haul international carriers use Suvarnabhumi, which is also the shorter transfer to Pattaya. Low-cost airlines such as Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air mostly use Don Muang. If a connection lets you pick, choose Suvarnabhumi for the closer pickup.
Can I fly directly into Pattaya at U-Tapao?
Yes, when a suitable flight is scheduled. U-Tapao (UTP) is the closest airport to the city, but its scheduled service is limited and varies by season, so a route that fits your origin may not exist. Check the connection before planning around it; otherwise arrive at Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang.
How far is each airport from Pattaya?
U-Tapao is closest at about 40 to 50 minutes. Suvarnabhumi is the nearer Bangkok airport, about 90 km and a 1 to 1.5 hour drive on Motorway 7. Don Muang is the farthest, roughly 180 km and 2 to 2.5 hours, because it sits north of Bangkok and the drive crosses the city.
