Why Pattaya to DMK Costs ฿200 More Than Suvarnabhumi

Bangkok has two airports, and they sit on opposite sides of the city. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is on the eastern edge, the Pattaya side, about 90 km from town. Don Muang (DMK) is the older airport on the far north side, roughly 180 km from Pattaya. The DMK run is close to double the distance and adds a crossing of Bangkok, so the sedan fare is ฿1,300 to DMK against ฿1,100 to Suvarnabhumi. The ฿200 gap is the extra kilometres and city driving, not a surcharge. If your airline flies from either airport, BKK is the cheaper and shorter pickup.

Don Muang: Bangkok's Budget-Airline Airport

Don Muang is the base for Thailand's low-cost carriers. Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air run most of their domestic network from here, alongside regional budget flights on AirAsia and Scoot to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and southern China. If your ticket is with one of those airlines, you are almost certainly departing from DMK rather than Suvarnabhumi. Don Muang has two terminals: Terminal 1 for international departures and Terminal 2 for domestic. Tell us the airline and flight number and the driver pulls up at the right departures level, so you walk straight to the check-in row.

The Route: Motorway 7, Then North Across Bangkok

The driver collects you in Pattaya and joins Motorway 7, the Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya motorway, which runs fast and open toward the city. The slower part comes at the Bangkok end, because Don Muang sits north of the city centre while the motorway feeds in from the east, so the driver links onto the outer-ring and elevated expressways to cross to the north side and the airport. In normal conditions the drive runs 2 to 2.5 hours.

Traffic on the Bangkok approach is the main variable, and weekday rush hours add the most time on the city side. For a daytime flight we build that buffer into the recommended pickup. Before dawn the roads are clear and the run is at its most predictable.

Early-Morning Flights from DMK: When to Leave Pattaya

Budget airlines schedule a lot of early departures from Don Muang to keep aircraft moving, so many DMK flights leave between 6:00 and 8:00 AM. Work backwards from yours. For a 7:00 AM international flight, aim to be at Terminal 1 by about 5:00 AM, which after 2 to 2.5 hours of driving means a Pattaya pickup near 2:30 to 3:00 AM. A domestic flight needs a little less lead time at the airport, so the pickup can be slightly later. Give us the flight time at booking and we suggest a pickup hour that allows for the slow end of the drive plus your airline's check-in cut-off.

The service runs around the clock with no night surcharge, so a 3:00 AM sedan to DMK is the same ฿1,300 as a midday one. Book the day before at the latest so the car and driver are assigned before you sleep, and you are not chasing a ride at 2 AM.

Pick the sedan for a couple or a solo traveller, the SUV when you are carrying golf bags or bulky cases that need the extra boot space, and the minivan for groups up to nine. Give us your hotel name or street address anywhere in the Pattaya area, from Beach Road and Second Road to Jomtien, Pratumnak, Naklua, Na Jomtien, or Bang Saray, plus your pickup time. The driver comes to the lobby or door and helps load your bags. The fixed fare also covers drop-off at your DMK departures level, bottled water in the car, and a child seat on request. Every vehicle is air-conditioned and non-smoking.
