Suvarnabhumi: Thailand's Main International Gateway

Suvarnabhumi (say "su-wan-na-poom") carries the bulk of Thailand's long-haul traffic. Thai Airways, EVA Air, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, and the other full-service carriers fly out of here to Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and across Asia. If you are heading home on a direct or connecting long-haul ticket, your departure is almost certainly from BKK rather than Don Muang, which is the low-cost carriers' base. The airport runs as one vast terminal instead of the two separate buildings at Don Muang, so there is a single set of check-in rows to find.

Where the Driver Drops You: Departures, Floor 4

All check-in at Suvarnabhumi sits on Floor 4, the departures level. Counters run in lettered rows from A through W, grouped by airline, with your row shown on the booking confirmation and on the hall screens. The driver pulls up at the Floor 4 kerb, a short walk from the doors nearest your airline, rather than the arrivals level one floor down. Tell us the carrier when you book and the driver stops at the departures entrance closest to your check-in zone. Immigration and security clear on the same floor after check-in.

A Direct Run East on Motorway 7: No City Crossing

Suvarnabhumi sits on the eastern edge of Bangkok, the same side as Pattaya and Jomtien, which is why this transfer stays cheaper than the Don Muang one even from the further-out Jomtien pickup. The driver leaves Jomtien, joins Motorway 7, and stays on it nearly the whole way to the airport interchange, with no need to cross or skirt the city the way a Don Muang trip does. The road tracks the eastern seaboard past Chonburi and the industrial estates before the airport feeder peels off. The ~110 km run holds its time well; the sedan is ฿1,200 here against ฿1,500 to Don Muang, the difference being the shorter distance and the saved city driving.

Where Jomtien Sits and the Same-Fare Na Jomtien Pickup

Jomtien Beach is 3 km south of central Pattaya, a 6 km stretch of sand split into North Jomtien by Dongtan Beach, Central Jomtien on the main hotel strip, and South Jomtien, which runs on into Na Jomtien. Na Jomtien continues further south, roughly 115 to 120 km from the airport against Jomtien Beach's 110 km. Timing a Long-Haul Departure: When to Leave Jomtien

International flights want you at the counter early. Suvarnabhumi check-in opens about three hours before departure, most airlines close it 45 to 60 minutes before the flight, and on a busy evening bank the immigration queues alone can swallow a fair chunk of time. Many long-haul services to Europe and the Middle East leave BKK late at night, roughly between 11:00 PM and 2:00 AM, with a second wave in the morning. For a midnight departure, plan to be at the airport by about 9:00 PM, which after the 1.5 to 2 hour drive puts the Jomtien pickup near 6:30 to 7:00 PM; a morning flight moves that pickup to before dawn.
